Girls trump boys on state math tests

Girls are doing a number on boys in math.

New York City girls in grades 3 to 8 outscored boys on state math tests for the second straight year, with 35.2 percent passing this year, compared to 33.4 percent of the boys passing.

The girls also widened their lead over the opposite sex.

City girls improved their scores by 5.2 percentage points from last year, while city boys gained 4.1 points.

Proficiency levels increased in all grades, except for eighth.

Elizabeth Green, author of “Building a Better Teacher” and co- founder of the Chalkbeat education Web site, said the results were nothing to crow about since about two-thirds of both boys and girls aren’t meeting math standards.

“We don’t teach math very well in school,” she said. “What’s rewarded is merely rule following. Both boys and girls aren’t getting the math education they deserve.”

City girls also performed substantially better on English tests than boys for the second year in a row. Nearly one-third of city girls, 32.6 percent, tested proficient in English while only 24.3 percent of the boys did.

Studies say girls may outscore boys in early grades because they’re often more focused and detail-oriented then.
