Mayor’s next nanny move: Hiding cigs from buyers

The Issue: Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed ban on displaying cigarettes in stores, to decrease smoking.

***

Congratulations to Mayor Bloomberg for his brilliant idea to deter smoking by having bodegas and convenience stores hide the cigarettes (“Smoke Screen,” March 19).

Perhaps his next step should be to fight heart disease by having supermarkets hide the marbled beef and half-n-half.

Or, he can just keep quiet on these issues until his term is up and save whatever is left of his mayoral reputation.

Nanny Bloomberg is at it again. When will he stop?

This is America; people have the right to choose what they put into their body. Bloomberg doesn’t understand that.

Apparently, he won’t be happy until he controls every aspect of the New Yorkers’ lives.

Want to know the really scary part? There are actually people who agree with him.

I guess people really don’t want to be responsible for their own lives.

They don’t have a problem with the government telling them what they can and cannot do.

To all those people, I ask you this: Why do you live in America?

It seems that you don’t care about your freedoms being taken away.

If that’s the case, why don’t you live someplace else, like Cuba or North Korea?

I am not a smoker, and I rarely drink soda. But, those are choices I made. I don’t need or want the government telling me that I can’t smoke or have large, sugary drinks.

Give these freedoms away and the government won’t stop until it has taken away all of them.Bret Wallach

Bloomberg wants cigarettes hidden from view in stores. He feels this will make young people less likely to start smoking. As the saying goes: “Out of sight, out of mind.”

It is a good move. One less young person not smoking is an adult not smoking and dying of cancer and leaving their own young children.

Kudos, Mike!
