Amazon reveals new smartphone by accident

Jeff Bezos is no Martin Scorsese.

Amazon posted a teaser video on YouTube meant to gin up some suspense for a mystery product — but instead let the cat out of the bag.

The 50-second clip shows people’s oohing and aahing over some handheld device that is held just off camera. Only Amazon accidently gives viewers a glimpse of the product toward the end.

The clip shown in slow motion — a setting available on YouTube — shows the top of what is clearly a black smartphone right around the 41-second mark. A woman wearing a blue sweater holds it in her hand and declares, “That’s fantastic.”

Earlier leaked images suggest that the phone will come with multiple cameras to create a 3D interface and motion sensors, allowing people to control the device without using their hands. The latter would also explain why some people in the video are rolling their heads around.

Amazon will only say that it is holding a big event on June 18 in Seattle that will be hosted by Bezos.

Amazon’s move into phones is being viewed as another attempt to go after Apple in the gadget department. Amazon also has a tablet and a new TV set-top box.
