Cosmos draw 200 to first combine, sign ex-MLS striker Peri Marosevic

The New York Cosmos added Peri Marosevic today, after the striker impressed at a Long Island combine that drew over 200 hopefuls.

“The quality at the combine was impressive and these players showed very well over the weekend,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “They are clearly comfortable with the ball at their feet and they each have decent experience for their ages. These two strengthen us up front and give us different options.”

The 23-year-old Marosevic most recently played for Croatia’s Junak Sinj. After a standout college career at the University of Michigan, he signed a Generation Adidas contract and was drafted 5th overall by FC Dallas in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.

“Peri has tremendous talent on the field and a lot of potential,” Savarese said. “He’s played with very high competition and we recognize that he is determined to get back to that level. After watching him perform like he did at the combine, I can see he’s ready to take that step.”

Marosevic made four appearances with FC Dallas in MLS between 2009 and 2011. He was traded to Toronto FC in July 2011, playing seven league games and scoring two league goals.

In 2012, he joined Junak Sinj of Croatia’s second division, where he made four appearances. He also appeared 14 times for the US U-20 team, scoring five goals between 2008 and 2009.

Over 500 people applied online for the Cosmos Combine and more than 200 were officially invited to attend.

“This combine was really strong,” Savarese said. “There were a lot of intriguing options and with all the talent that showed up, it’s possible that we will take a closer look at a couple more players or invite them for further trials.”
