Giants release Curry, trim roster down to 75

The Giants in advance of Tuesday’s roster cut-down deadline trimmed down to 75 players by cutting 14 players, the most notable being linebacker Aaron Curry. They also made a transaction they hoped they wouldn’t have to make, putting safety Stevie Brown on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL.

That trims the roster from 90 to 75.

In addition to Curry, the players released Sunday: Fullback Ben Guidugli; wide receivers Brandon Collins (who faces a four-game NFL suspension at the beginning of the season) and Terrence Sinkfield; tight ends Jamie Childers and Chase Clement; offensive linemen Michael Jasper and Austin Holtz; linebackers Jake Muasau and Etienne Sabino; defensive tackle Frank Okam; and defensive backs Laron Scott, Junior Mertile and Alonzo Tweedy.

None of the cuts came as a surprise. Even though Curry was the No. 4 overall pick by the Seahawks in the 2009 NFL Draft his attempt to resuscitate his NFL career did not materialize this summer. The Giants took a chance on him with a risk-free one-year deal, hoping to see some of the talent Curry displayed back at Wake Forest. Curry stayed healthy but was not productive and against the Jets this past Saturday night he was on the field for only 12 snaps, overtaken on the depth chart by another newcomer, Kyle Bosworth, as the second-team strong side linebacker.

Curry seemed to take the news in stride. He tweeted “When God reveals things and makes it known BELIEVE him. My time here has been awesome.’’ He also tweeted “Giants fans have been awesome. Y’all cool wit me. Much respect for the franchise.’’

The only other veteran cut was Okam, who had played in 25 games with six starts for the Texans and Buccaneers from 2008-2011.
