Nets to bring back potential draftees so Kidd can see them

Nets general manager Billy King said earlier this week that now that Jason Kidd has officially been brought into the fold as the team’s next head coach, the Nets will be bringing players back in for additional workouts in order to allow Kidd to get a look at them ahead of the draft next Thursday.

You would think that the idea of having to go back and take another look at some players like that could potentially be an issue for a scouting group trying to take advantage of every possible moment in the limited amount of time left leading up to the draft. But for Nets director of player personnel Gregg Polinsky, having Kidd’s perspective – coming off a Hall of Fame career – will only be a benefit to the process.

“Obviously we embrace it and welcome it, because of the type of player that he was, and his eye for the players and how they might fit and work for what he wants to do,” Polinsky said after the team held its latest workout at its practice facility Wednesday.

“It’s invaluable. It’s important. For him to have a feel about the guy and meet him, not just as much seeing him out here in this workout, because we have a ton of video he can watch, his staff, to get a feel of what they think. It doesn’t disrupt the flow of what we’re doing at all. I just think it adds another dimension that is very important for us to making a final decision.”

All of the Nets decision makers – including Kidd – were on hand for the team’s workout Wednesday, one that saw the top prospect scheduled to be there, former Murray State point guard Isaiah Canaan, miss it because of an ankle injury.

Kidd, however, downplayed any role he might have in the decision-making process when the draft arrives next week.

“I’ll be very lightly involved,” he said with a smile at Yankee Stadium before throwing out the first pitch before the second half of Wednesday’s day-night doubleheader between the Yankees and Dodgers. “They’ll probably ask for my opinion, and that’s it. I won’t be heavily involved.”

Kidd added that he had a notebook and his iPad with him, so he could catch up on some of the players he still doesn’t know much about.

But after another group workout Thursday full of players like to be second round or possible D-League prospects, the Nets will likely have a couple more workouts next week once Polinsky gets all of his scouts and everyone together this weekend. They all will then spend the final few days before the draft – which will be at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the Nets will hold their draft headquarters instead of their usual place at the team’s practice facility in New Jersey – getting their draft board in order.

“All of our scouts come in Sunday, so we’re just trying to put the finishing touches on it,” Polinsky said. “We’ll go back and do some background with several guys, and we’re still doing our video study on certain guys. Some guys emerge and, as we look at our roster, what we think might happen, things that Billy may decide he wants to do with it, so we’re coming down the stretch.”
