Highly touted women’s basketball recruit Chong chooses UConn

Geno Auriemma and Connecticut still own women’s basketball recruiting on the East Coast.

The commitment of Ossining (N.Y.) superstar Saniya Chong merely reminded everyone.

The 5-foot-9 guard, who is originally from The Bronx, with limitless range and a slick handle picked the Huskies over Louisville, Maryland and Ohio State on Saturday morning during her official visit, the New Haven Register reported. The first member of Auriemma’s 2013 recruiting class, Chong averaged 33.3 points, 9.7 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 5 steals per game as a junior and also had 100 3-pointers. She had four 40-point games — twice scoring 55 points — and had four triple-doubles.

“The players are amazing,” Chong told the Connecticut paper. “I thought I connected with the players here and I thought it was the perfect fit. You always want that connection with the players, but you also need that connection on the court. I like the speed they play at, the intensity they have.”

Chong led Ossining to a 23-1 mark last year and the NYPHSAA Class AA state semifinals. It’s lone loss came to eventual state Federation champion Cicero-North Syracuse and current UConn freshman Breanna Stewart. The more than 2,000-point scorer was invited to try out for the USA U17 national team.
