Joe Maddon added a little levity to Bobby Valentine’s radio breakdown.
Valentine, the Red Sox manager, told a radio host Wednesday that he would “punch you right in the mouth” following a question asking if Valentine had mentally “checked out” this season. The inquiry was spurred by reports that Valentine had arrived late to a recent game, to which Valentine replied that Maddon, the Rays manager, “gets there every day at 4 o’clock, just for the record.”
Maddon tweeted later Wednesday afternoon: “Apologies to the writers for being late to today’s pregame session. My pedicure appointment ran a little late.”
Maddon said he was “amused” by Valentine’s comments. To open his pregame press media availability Wednesday, Maddon told reporters, “Sorry I’m late. I just got here.”
“I’m very flattered by the whole thing,” Maddon said. “I think it’s very amusing, that’s all. Seriously, that’s all. I’m amused by the moment, and it’s flattering someone would include me in that conversation.”
Maddon and Valentine have had their issues this season. After a beaning incident in May, Maddon said Red Sox coaches were “cowardly” and “weak” for having pitchers throw at hitters.
Valentine clarified his punching statement Wednesday night before a loss against the Mariners, saying “Didn’t I go, ‘Ha, ha?’ I don’t think physical violence is necessary for 60-year-old people.”
