Kids want tech gadgets not clothes for new school year: survey

Were you planning to buy your kids fancy new clothes to ring in the new school year? Well, they don’t want ’em.

More than 40 percent of kids from ages 8 to 18 would rather have a new smartphone, laptop or tablet, according to a new survey by online shopping site eBates. Roughly the same number of parents (43%) think their kids want new clothes this time of year.

Only 10% of parents thought high-tech products were what their youngsters wanted.

The survey also revealed that 43% of parents plan to do their back-to-school shopping in August, as opposed to July or September.

And 55% of parents plan to spend the same amount this year that they did last year, which suggests that unless those parents splurged on high-tech gadgets in 2011, their digitally-savvy kids may be disappointed.

eBates surveyed 2,208 parents and 1,142 kids nationwide in June.
