Brett Gardner to undergo season-ending surgery

OAKLAND — Brett Gardner will undergo season-ending surgery next week in New York.

Gardner, who hasn’t played since April 17 due to a strained right elbow, was shut down twice in minor league rehab assignments and said he was sore after a simulated game Sunday in Tampa.

Dr. Chris Ahmad, Dr. Tim Kremchek and Dr. James Andrews talked the past two days after Gardner underwent an MRI Tuesday and came to the conclusion that arthroscopic surgery was the best route. That was something the trio didn’t believe was necessary in mid-June when they examined Gardner and looked at the MRI results.
