Westhoff says Giants punter ‘wasn’t good enough’ to play for Jets

Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff had some parting shots Thursday for former Jets punter Steve Weatherford.

Weatherford signed with the Giants as a free agen, and has said he did not want to come back to the Jets. The feeling was clearly mutual.

“I was disappointed in some of the poor performances that he had at the end of the year,” Westhoff said. “It wasn’t very good. You were there. You were up in New England? The ball went straight out (of bounds). … There were times when he just didn’t do the job. I was looking to get better than what he did at that point in time. … Wasn’t good enough, in my opinion. It wasn’t. I don’t want to be 23rd in the NFL. That’s where he was.”

The Jets ranked 23rd in the league with an average of 42.6 yards per punt. In Weatherford’s defense, he did tie an NFL record for most punts inside the 20, with 42 last year.

Weatherford had some awful moments last year. He faked a punt against Green Bay on a fourth-and-18 on his own, which he did not convert. The punt in New England Westhoff referenced was a 12-yarder in the Jets’ 45-3 loss.

“I was very happy with Steve in some things he did and very, very disappointed in others,” Westhoff said. “To tell you the truth, I don’t want to be 23rd. I’m not 23rd in anything else.”
