Favre will skip practice, but Vikings plan he’ll play

Brett Favre is not going to practice Wednesday as he deals with a sprained right shoulder, a new injury that could put an end to his streak of 297 consecutive starts as the Vikings get ready for Sunday’s game against the Giants.

“He probably won’t practice [tomorrow] but we’ll get a chance to see how he looks on Thursday and just try to make a determination based on that, you know, how things will look for Sunday,’’ interim Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said today on Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Radio. “But we’re all hoping that he’ll be healthy enough to play. He’s still a great quarterback and if he’s able to play it gives us a great chance to win against New York.’’

Although backup Tavaris Jackson stepped in last Sunday and directed the Vikings to a 38-14 victory over the Bills — Favre was hurt on his first pass of the game — Frazier said after that game that Favre is the starter as long as he’s healthy.

“Brett, he’s our starting quarterback and if he’s healthy he’s gonna be out there,’’ Frazier said. “If there’s any definition of an Iron Man, it would be Brett Favre. I mean, it’s incredible what he’s accomplished in his career. For a quarterback to play that many consecutive games? I don’t think that’s a streak that will ever be broken. But he can still play at a high level and there’s no question in my mind, if he’s healthy he’ll lead us to a win on Sunday.’’

Giants LT David Diehl on ESPN Radio said “I’m playing this weekend.’’

Diehl missed the prior four games with hip and hamstring issues.

The Vikings signed former UFL running back Lorenzo Booker.

Booker played for the Hartford Colonials and rushed for 410 yards in seven games, leading the league with 5.4 yards per carry.

With Adrian Peterson playing on a sprained ankle, backup Toby Gerhart hurting his hamstring, and third-stringer Albert Young injuring his knee in Sunday’s game against the Bills, the Vikings were thin at running back.

They placed Young on injured reserve to make room for Booker.

The Vikings also signed quarterback R.J. Archer to the practice squad. They waived center Adrian Martinez from the practice squad to make room.
