Moore of the same as Rays sweep Orioles

Matt Moore pitched seven innings of five-hit ball to stay unbeaten, Luke Scott and Matt Joyce homered and the Rays beat the Orioles 3-1 yesterday in Baltimore for a three-game sweep.

Moore (8-0) gave up one run, struck out three and walked one. The left-hander has won nine straight decisions, breaking the franchise record of eight set last year by David Price.

The Rays’ ninth win in 11 games put them a season-high three games over .500 (23-20) and lifted Tampa Bay into a third-place tie with skidding Baltimore in the AL East. The Rays had been in fourth since April 20.

Rangers 11, Tigers 8

David Murphy put Texas ahead with a three-run home run, and the host Rangers spoiled a three-homer game from Miguel Cabrera.

Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the fifth off Derek Holland, then went deep again in the eighth against Tanner Scheppers. He went 4 for 4 with 5 RBIs and has 11 homers, one off the AL lead.

Red Sox 5, Twins 1

In Minneapolis, John Lackey allowed one hit over six innings before a three-hour rain delay, Dustin Pedroia and Will Middlebrooks homered and the Red Sox beat the Twins for their fifth straight win.

The delay lasted long enough for the Twins to show the 1993 movie “The Sandlot” in its entirety on Target Field’s videoboard.

Angels 6, White Sox 2

In Anaheim, Jason Vargas scattered four hits through seven scoreless innings, Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick each hit two-run doubles, and the Angels coaxed a pair of bases-loaded walks out of Jake Peavy in the fourth inning and beat the White Sox.

Indians 6, Mariners 0

In Cleveland, Justin Masterson struck out a season-high 11 in seven shutout innings and Michael Brantley homered and drove in four runs off Felix Hernandez as the Indians beat the Mariners to topple yet another former Cy Young Award winner. The Indians improved to 7-1 against Cy Young recipients, knocking off Hernandez, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Bartolo Colon and Justin Verlander.

Phillies 3, Reds 2

In Philadelphia, Freddy Galvis and Erik Kratz each homered off closer Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying the Phillies past the Reds for a stunning victory.

Chapman (3-2) blew his second straight save opportunity after converting his first eight chances this season.

Braves 5, Dodgers 2

In Atlanta, Ramiro Pena had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in a four-run eighth inning, Jordan Schafer drove in two runs and the Braves rallied against the Dodgers’ beleaguered bullpen for the victory in a game twice delayed by rain for a total of two hours, 15 minutes.

Cardinals 4, Brewers 2

In St. Louis, David Freese had an RBI in a four-run fourth inning to go with big plays at third base, and the Cardinals beat the Brewers, their third win this season over former teammate Kyle Lohse.

Padres 13, Nationals 4

In San Diego, Andrew Cashner pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and Kyle Blanks and Will Venable homered off Dan Haren to lead the Padres.

Marlins 2, Diamondbacks 1

In Miami, Ricky Nolasco struck out 11 and the Marlins stopped a season-high seven-game losing streak, holding off the Diamondbacks, who loaded the bases in the ninth, but came up with just one run.

Pirates 1, Astros 0

In Pittsburgh, Jeff Locke allowed three hits over seven innings, Pedro Alvarez homered and the Pirates notched their eighth win in 10 games.
