Mets talking with MLS about soccer team

MLS commissioner Don Garber said the league has had ongoing talks with Mets CEO Fred Wilpon and COO Jeff Wilpon about bringing a soccer team to Queens.

“We very much want a second team here,” Garber said today at the unveiling of new Red Bull Thierry Henry. “I continue to have discussions with the Wilpon family of the New York Mets about seeing whether we could convince them that soccer would be better in Queens than hockey. We have work to do with the city to get their support for building a stadium.”

Both the Mets and Garber told the Post earlier this season that they’d re-opened discussions about an MLS team after they’d briefly been shelved. And while Garber admits there are hurdles to clear in terms of getting a stadium constructed, he hoped that the signing of Henry and any potential success of the Red Bulls would help get a second New York team.

“I think if we’re able to really make a lot of noise here, get lots of people to come out, have this team resonate throughout the tri-state area, it will be that much easier to convince everybody we need to convince about that second team.”
