Syndergaard has shoulder sprain, will rest a week

SAN FRANCISCO — Noah Syndergaard appears to have avoided serious injury for the second time in three weeks.

The Mets’ top pitching prospect was diagnosed with a sprained AC joint in the left shoulder on Friday prior to the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Giants, a day after a collision at home plate forced him to leave his start for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Syndergaard underwent X-rays and a CT scan, which were negative for a possible fracture of the scapula. According to the Mets, he will rest for the next five-to-seven days, then resume throwing as tolerated.

Last month, Syndergaard traveled to New York for an MRI exam after experiencing soreness in his right forearm. The test was negative for structural damage, and Syndergaard was prescribed shoulder exercises.

On Thursday, he was covering the plate in a tag play when he sustained the shoulder injury.

Dillon Gee [strained lat] has begun throwing on flat ground in recent days, according to manager Terry Collins. The right-hander likely remains at least two weeks away from rejoining the Mets’ rotation.

Eric Young Jr. has backed off his running program after incurring more tightness in his right hamstring.

Matt Harvey’s initial throwing session from a bullpen mound since undergoing Tommy John surgery last October has been postponed because the Mets want to go slower with the right-hander in his rehab.

Harvey originally was scheduled to throw Monday or Tuesday in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Jeremy Hefner is scheduled to throw Tuesday from a mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August.

Andrew Brown received a second straight start in left field, a night after hitting a two-run homer against the Cubs. He went 0-for-3.

Collins said he was intrigued with Brown’s power potential.

“He’s got big power, and we know that,” Collins said. “When he got up here he was a role player and not getting consistent at-bats. It’s tough to keep it rolling when you get in there once every three or four days.”

After selecting Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto with their top pick (10th overall) in this year’s draft on Thursday, the Mets made eight more selections Friday.

Their picks included shortstop Milton Ramos, American Heritage H.S. (Fla.) in the third round; third baseman Eudor Garcia-Pacheco, El Paso (Texas) Community College in the fourth round; right-handed pitcher Josh Prevost, Seton Hall in the fifth round; catcher Tyler Moore, LSU in the sixth round; left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck, Oklahoma City University, in the seventh round; first baseman Dash Winningham, Trinity Catholic H.S. (Fla.) in the eighth round; outfielder Michael Katz, William & Mary in the ninth round; and left-handed pitcher Kelly Secreast, UNC-Wilmington in the 10th round.

The Mets lost their second-round pick for signing Curtis Granderson last offseason.
