Jacobs: Gov and I discussed ‘realities’ of current political turmoil

State Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs came away from a private meeting with Gov. Paterson saying hinting the governor knows he’s in trouble and will bring a quick resolution to his campaign.

Jacobs declined repeatedly to get into details or say what the “realities” were that he and Paterson discussed, saying only that it was a good meeting between “friends.”

But he said at their Thursday night meeting, “I laid out the political landscape and the realities and I think that the governor has assessed the situation and he’s going to deal with it pretty quickly.”

Reading between the lines, that suggests the governor is planning to suspend his campaign — which multiple sources suggested the governor is looking at doing as soon as today.

Many political insiders who’d spoken with the governor’s team said he was also assessing the calls to step down — but did not expect him to, at least right away.

Instead, depending on what emerges from the investigation into intimidation allegations over a domestic violence dispute, he is likeliest to say he will pull the plug on his run for now.

And while he’s known as mercurial, most people agree he can’t endure a drumbeat that includes top African-American supporters.
