Sharpton still backing Gillibrand – for now

The Rev. Al Sharpton is sticking with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand “for now” – but he said he talks to her potential challenger Harold Ford. quite frequently.

“I talk to him all the time,” Sharpton said on NY1’s “Inside City Hall” tonight. “I’ve known him most of his life…I have no idea if he’s running, though.”

He added, “I have not withdrawn my support of Sen. Gllibrand, for now.”

Ford wowed the audience at Sharpton’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, and the reverend gave him a boost by squiring him to a Mount Vernon church event while Gillibrand was still on the dais at his own event.

He said he’d cautioned Ford that he should expect tougher media reviews if he does run.

And he also offered some of his strongest defenses in recent memory of Gov. Paterson, saying he was being abused by the press.
