UFT sues to nix charters

The teachers union yesterday filed a lawsuit against the city to stop Mayor Bloomberg from opening more charter schools after he leaves office next year.

The United Federation of Teachers filed the suit to stop more than a dozen charter-school co-locations from opening after the mayor’s term ends on Dec. 31.

“The mayor is trying to control beyond the time that he is mayor, and we’re not going to let that happen,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew, according to the union Web site.

The charter school co-locations exist within other district schools. Most charters have been established as co-locations.

The union argues that creating charter-school co-locations takes away much-needed space from already-existing schools and has an overall negative impact on children’s education.

Mulgrew believes the mayor is planning “dozens and dozens” more co-locations before he leaves office.

The suit is the latest development in a long battle between the UFT and the Bloomberg administration.

The Mayor’s Office could not be reached for comment early this morning.
