Ithaca College offers up to $10K to defer enrollment

ITHACA, N.Y. — An upstate New York college is paying some students not to go to school this year.

After Ithaca College saw enrollment decline last year, it adjusted admissions policies and ended up exceeding its enrollment target by 250 students this year.

The college built a temporary dorm — in six weeks at a cost of $2.5 million — to take care of about half of those students.

But for 31 would-be freshmen who couldn’t be accommodated, the school offered tuition credits of up to $10,000 for waiting until next fall to begin classes.

The college also offered $2,000 credits to upperclassmen to move off campus, opening up more dormitory space.

Even after the incentives, the college says it will benefit financially from the over-enrollment.
