Food Beware

Yet another unhappy-meal documentary, the French film “Food Beware” consists of endless scenes of villagers talking about pesticides interspersed with equally rambling sequences of schoolchildren working in an organic garden. The movie, released in France under the even more hectoring title “Our Children Will Accuse Us,” presents a dog’s breakfast of unsupported assertions and anecdotal evidence meant to convince you that non-organic food (French food, anyway) is causing cancer.

But finding a relative of a cancer victim in a region where pesticides are used doesn’t prove the case any more than interviewing a 90-year-old who has never been sick in his life would prove anything. You may or may not be a scared person going into this movie, but nothing in it is going to change your mind.

If anything is frightening here, it’s the scenes of the small children being indoctrinated into an organic lifestyle and being made to sing, at least three times, a song about the evils supposedly lurking in the environment around them.

In French with English subtitles. Running time: 112 minutes. Not rated (discussion of cancer). At the Quad, 13th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
