Blaze rips through Bronx neighborhood

A ferocious blaze ripped through a Bronx neighborhood Sunday, leaving some residents homeless, authorities and witnesses said.

About 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, which started at around 5:30 p.m. in a house and spread to six other homes on Schuyler Terrace in Throggs Neck, FDNY officials said.

“The flames were immense … it literally looked like the sky was on fire,” said Anthony Perretti, 53, whose home suffered damage. “The flames kept spreading as the wind was blowing, and they caught onto the other homes. At least two of the homes are completely in ashes.”

Jennifer Luisi, 35, who ran out of her home to warn neighbors when she first saw the flames from her kitchen window, lost her house in the fire.

“My family lost everything, the house is destroyed,” Luisi said. “But at least we have our lives.”

The fire was extinguished around 7:30 p.m. and there were no reported injuries, FDNY officials said.

“Essentially, what happened here is the fire started in one of the homes and because the houses are bungalow-style, the fire spread to seven different buildings,” said FDNY spokesman Khalid Baylor at the scene.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, though witnesses reported seeing downed power lines in the area.

“I heard a series of pops outside, each one louder than the other. It made me think that this was an electrical issue,” Perretti said.
