McChrystal will retire as four-star general: White House

Gen. Stanley McChrystal will retire from the U.S. Army as a four-star general, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Tuesday.

McChrystal is expected to retain his rank in his retirement despite the fact that he was not “technically” in his position long enough to leave at the level, Gibbs told reporters during the White House daily press briefing Tuesday.

The general informed the office that handles Army retirements Monday of his decision, but no official paperwork has been filed, an Army spokesman told Fox.

McChrystal was removed from command by President Barack Obama in the wake of a profile published in Rolling Stone magazine that featured strong criticism of the administration’s civilian leadership of the conflict.
