Nimoy throws in the towel

Leonard Nimoy has lived long and prospered — and now he’s ready to retire.

Having recently shot his final scene as a guest star on “Fringe,” playing mysterious scientist Dr. William Bell, the 79-year-old actor says that he’s done with acting.

“I’ve been doing this professionally for 60 years,” Nimoy told the Toronto Sun. “I love the idea of going out on a positive note. I’ve had a great time.”

The man who brought Spock to life says that his “Star Trek” days are done too, which means no cameo for him in the “Star Trek”-reboot sequel due in 2012.

“I want to get off stage,” he said, to give room for pointy-eared inheritor Zachary Quinto to take over the Spock character on the big screen. “He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.”

From now on, Nimoy intends to concentrate on his photography. (His specialty is unusual nude portraits.) People were skeptical about his photos, “but I’ve built credibility now in the art world,” he said.
