A gold star from the White House

President Obama’s Education Department yesterday emphasized the White House’s support of charter schools.

“Our support for high-quality charter schools is a matter of record,” said Peter Cunningham, spokesman for Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Cunningham declined to discuss specifics in New York because federal education officials are still reviewing state proposals for “Race to the Top” funds.

Obama has urged states to lift “arbitrary” caps on charter schools, and states applying for Race to the Top funds are judged, in part, on whether they encourage or hinder the schools.

“We want to learn from successful charter schools,” Obama said last month.
