The braidy bunch

Spring’s must-have hair is cheap and twisted. Taking a cue from the runway, this season’s hairdo “do” is the braid — effortless, feminine and easy to re-create in your bathroom. “It’s a braid frenzy! My favorite variation was Alexander Wang’s because it’s sexier, Bohemian and anybody can do it,” says celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger, referencing the designer’s spring 2010 Fashion Week show. Prada and Oscar de la Renta also sent braidy models down the runway, and celebrities such as Kate Bosworth, Nicole Richie and Lauren Conrad have been working the look, too. Actresses Jane Krakowski and Christina Hendricks have joined the bunch, proving that the chic style has no age limit.

“I like the juxtaposition with the fashion. To set it off a little bit,” Hershberger says about pairing the laid-back hair look with this season’s edgy leather, studs and cut-off denim trend now in vogue. “That’s what makes it fashionable and cool, that hard with the soft. My favorite look is Bohemian meets rock.”

For Hershberger, this look is all about volume and texture. She recommends starting with wet hair upside down and using your fingers to blow-dry. Spritz all over with a thickening spray (she recommends Shape Up, $24 at her salon, 423 W. 14th St.), bring hair to one side and start loosely braiding it. Finish with hairspray (she recommends Genius Spray Rocks, $12.50 at Duane Reade) for hold and added texture. “It’s springtime. It’s time for newness. And it’s time to be a little disheveled,” she says. “Also, it’s super-sexy.”
