Ginseng growers getting a reality show

History will revisit “Hatfields & McCoys” territory with a new reality show, “Appalachian Outlaws.”

The series, premiering Jan. 9, will focus on the battle over ginseng, which is in heavy demand and can fetch up to $600 a pound (who knew?).

The show will track the people who grow, dig for and sell the ginseng, which can only be harvested over a short two-month season (lasting from the end of summer until the first frost).

“With ginseng fever heating up, outsiders are creeping in on locals’ territory to find it, causing massive turf wars over this heavily revered root,” says History in describing “Appalachian Outlaws.”

The series will air Thursdays at 9 p.m. and is produced by Fremantle Media.
