‘I went from being a newlywed to a widow in less than 48 hours’

CROWN POINT, Ind. — Authorities say a newly married man and a stranded motorist he stopped to help while on his way to a hotel with his wife after the reception were killed when they were struck by several vehicles in northwest Indiana.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports 49-year-old William Knight was driving with his wife, Nikki, about 11:45 p.m. Saturday when they saw a woman who had slid off the road in the snow near Crown Point.

The Lake County sheriff’s office says Knight and 42-year-old Linda Darlington, both of Crown Point, were standing by the side of the road when they were struck by one vehicle, and then two more. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Knight’s wife, who had stayed in their vehicle, was not injured.

“I went from being a newlywed to a widow in less than 48 hours — the highest high to the lowest low,” Nikki told the Chicago Sun-Times. “It’s a blur.”
