Four die in Hudson boat crash upstate

A powerboat struck a concrete abutment along the Hudson River in Dutchess County and sank before sunrise yesterday, killing four occupants and seriously injuring two others, authorities said.

The body of 26-year-old John Uvino of Saugerties was found in the water, and it appeared he was thrown from the boat on impact, said Lt. John Watterson.

Divers recovered the bodies of three other boaters: Robert Macarthur, 27, Deena Cordero, 26, and Jay Bins, 41, all of Kingston.

Two others, 23-year-old Joseph Vehnick of Kingston and 27-year-old Jessica Hotaling of Hyde Park, were able to make it to shore.

Vehnick, who was badly injured, found a phone in a barn near the Red Hook crash site and called 911 just before 6:30 a.m., about two hours after investigators believe the crash occurred, Watterson said.

Both survivors suffered multiple fractures and were being treated at local hospitals.

It wasn’t immediately clear where the boat was coming from or headed and who was at the controls at the time of the crash.

Authorities found beer bottles in the boat and believe the occupants might have been drinking, Watterson said.

The boat was registered to Arthur Fiore of Kingston, who could not be reached for comment.
