Train service running again, commuters seeing delays

The city’s subways are rolling again.

Subways resumed service today after Tropical Storm Irene forced an unprecedented closure of the country’s largest mass transit system over the weekend.

The MTA said limited subway service resumed at 5:40 a.m. — just in time for the start of the morning rush hour.

The city’s three major airports also resumed flight operations this morning. Kennedy and Newark airports opened to arriving flights at 6 a.m. Departures at the two airports began at noon.

Transit officials vowed that service would improve over the course of the day. Service on the LIRR and Metro-North had also slowly returned, although there were delays.

Most riders who had expected a difficult time getting to work said they were relieved.
