iPads turn hotel into The iPlaza

When it comes to luxury at The Plaza, there’s an app for that.

The storied Fifth Avenue hotel has taken a leap into the 21st century by installing iPads for guests in every room.

The Apple tablets come loaded with apps that let guests communicate with the concierge, order room service, schedule spa treatments or shut off the lights.

They can also hook up to the Internet and get travel directions. And there’s a butler who can show guests how it all works.

“I like that The Plaza is going high-tech. They are really in touch with my generation,” said Annalee Smith, 27, a guest from Fresno, Calif.

The hotel has been providing iPads to guests at its Palm Court restaurant since last year.

Plaza general manager Shane Krige said that since the end of January, there has been a iPad in every one of the hotel’s 282 rooms. They work only on the hotel’s network.

Guests aren’t supposed take them out of their rooms and will be charged $800 if they disappear.
