Giffords eyed for Sen. run

WASHINGTON — While Rep. Gabrielle Giffords recovers from a gunshot wound to the head, several Democrats in Washington and Arizona are looking to her as a potential candidate to fill retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl’s seat, Politico.com reported yesterday.

Giffords (D-Ariz.) was floated as a potential candidate for the 2012 race during a closed-door meeting of Senate Democrats Thursday, the day Kyl announced he wouldn’t seek re-election, two sources told Politico.

The congresswoman remains at a Houston rehabilitation center after the Jan. 8 rampage that killed six and injured 14 outside a Tucson, Ariz., supermarket where she was meeting with constituents.

The Washington Post had reported last week that Giffords told political advisers prior to the shooting that she would consider a Senate run if Kyl stepped down.
