We sent Kentucky-born Graham, 25, out to meet 24-year-old Helen, a risk analyst, but a timing mix-up caused some confusion as to who was late and who was on time. But over Asian-inspired seafood at Dragonfly on the Upper East Side, the pair discovered they had some common interests. Did the two hit it off, or is it, as they say, all about timing?
He said:
When I arrived, I learned Helen had been waiting for 30 minutes. And to think I thought I was a little early, showing up at 8:20 p.m.! But instead, Helen told me we were supposed to meet at 8 p.m., so according to her I was late.
Either way, her charm quickly put me at ease. Plus, she was drinking Allagash White, which is one of my favorite beers. In fact, I worked at the Maine brewing company over one summer during college.
I thought Helen was really cute, having chosen a great dress for the occasion. She had some smart opinions, too, and insightful stories about her life.
Upon leaving, we exchanged pleasantries, but not numbers. We saw eye-to-eye on a few things, but weren’t a match made in heaven.
She said:
I was a bit nervous because I thought I was being stood up. Graham arrived a half-hour late, but I learned later he had been given two different arrival times and went with the later one. Oops!
Either way, the ice was broken when he noticed my Allagash White. He told me he worked at Allagash one summer because he went to school in Maine. That’s when we discovered we attended rival state colleges. I thought, “Could we be soul mates?”
Despite sharing many similar experiences, like also both having been teachers in Asia, it was clear that we lacked chemistry.
It was not for lack of effort on our parts, but I knew we weren’t going to exchange numbers. Hopefully, we’ll both reflect upon the date as an unconventional NY experience.
