Cop sustains injury after trying to restrain suspect

A cop smashed his head on an ambulette in Manhattan as he tried to restrain a suspect who wanted to escape, police sources said.

The officer had taken a man into custody shortly before 12:20 p.m. on East 120th Street and Park Avenue, when he tried to take off, source said.

As the cop struggled with him in the street, he collided with the ambulette’s mirror.

Other officers cuffed the suspect. He has not been charged yet, and it was not clear yet why he was initially arrested.

The injured cop is being treated at St. Luke’s Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.
