Cuomo’s assault on guns: pointless grandstanding?

The Issue: Gov. Cuomo’s Secure Ammunitions and Firearms Act, which he signed into law last week.

Frederic U. Dicker’s column on a possible boycott of the new law mandating the registration of assault rifles by assault-rifle owners is outrageous (“Hit Us With Your Best Shot, Andy,” Jan. 21).

Brian Olesen, president of the American Shooters Supply, said that he “heard from hundreds of people that they’re prepared to defy the law.”

New Yorkers do not have the right to pick and choose which laws to comply with. We can’t pass a school bus or drive through a red light if we’re in a rush. We can’t avoid paying taxes just because we would rather spend our money on other things. Paul Feiner

By passing the gun-control law, the Legislature has proved again that its utter ignorance is surpassed only by its complete stupidity (“Shooting for the White House,” Jan. 19).

Do these politicians believe that this law will stop any drug dealer, gangbanger, psychopath or felon from getting his weapon of choice?

All this will do is make criminals out of law-abiding citizens whose only crime would be violating this statute.

Now police officers are in violation if they exceed the seven-round limit by loading their weapons.

Gov. Cuomo did what President Obama has only dreamed of — he swept away any vestige of representative government in the state of New York. Separation of powers evaporated. Many legislators didn’t read the bill.

There are now moves to correct errors and omissions in the law. The Legislature should use this opportunity to reject any amendments until the people are heard and have the opportunity to reverse this unprecedented power grab.

If Cuomo thinks he is “shooting for the White House,” he should reconsider. Because the people now understand his methods, his path to the presidency will only consist of blue-state stones, and maybe just a few of them.

The pious Cuomo believes we cannot harvest the gas underneath our property without first completing an exhausting, lengthy study. But, he rammed his well-intentioned, virtually worthless, self-serving gun-control law through the capital while we slept. Where is the consistency?

His actions resemble those of a tyrant more than a presidential candidate. New York is not rising, it’s sinking.

Finally, someone cares about us pathetic souls.

The law that all gun owners must register their guns allows me to sleep at night knowing that all the gang members and drug dealers will be registering their weapons. Now I don’t have to move to a state where gun-toting bible-huggers are lurking in the darkness.

How about Cuomo for president? While we’re at it, putting armed guards in the over 100,000 public schools or even on the school buses would be a stimulus for the economy.

That will be expensive, but don’t worry: Our children will eventually pay the bill.Tom Hoy

Cuomo’s giving the Legislature 15 minutes to read and digest his gun-control bill before voting on it is simply a replay of Obama giving Congress just minutes to read his stimulus bill or his 2,700-page takeover of the entire medical system. Had there been any debate, the facts of what was in these bills would have caused a massive backlash. It’s all about what’s best for the politicians, not us.

The Democrats are practicing the old adage that when you’re skating on thin ice, skate fast.

Cuomo’s new gun law criminalizes the high-capacity magazines that law enforcement uses.

Seems the governor put the same amount of thought into this as he did into the policies as secretary of HUD, which helped contribute to the housing crisis. No wonder he thinks he’ll make a great candidate for president. Ready, fire, aim! Justin Short
