Good as gold

What’s a little liquor between good friends?

Here’s your first up-close look at “Klondike,” Discovery’s six-hour miniseries premiering next month with stars Richard Madden (Robb Stark from “Game of Thrones”) and Abbie Cornish (“Limitless”).

The cable network’s first-ever scripted minieseries, “Klondike” will air over three nights beginning Jan. 20. It tells the tale of the last great Gold Rush in the late 1890s and is based on Charlotte Gray’s book, “Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike.”

Madden plays Bill Haskell, who makes the journey through the rugged wilderness of North America with his childhood pal Byron Epstein (August Prew, who starred in the BBC’s “The Village” and in Showtime’s “The Borgias”).

Together, they travel to the lawless Canadian town of Dawson City, dubbed “The Paris of the North” — rife with murder, violence, greedy businessmen and vice as men seek their fortune in gold nuggets.

Once in Dawson City, Bill meets mill owner Belinda Mulrooney (Cornish) — and also aspiring writer Jack London (Johnny Simmons), who would go on to write the classic Klondike-inspired books “White Fang” and “The Call of the Wild.”

The miniseries, which will air for two hours each night (starting at 9 p.m.), also stars Tim Roth, Sam Shepard, Tim Blake Nelson and Conor Leslie.
