Five injured, cars charred in Queens manhole fires

Fire officials say two manhole fires in Queens caused minor injuries to five people and heavily charred two vehicles parked nearby.

Report of the fires came in at 12:38 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of 75th Street and 88th Avenue in the Woodside section.

Con Edison spokesman Allan Drury said the fire resulted from “a failure of underground electrical delivery equipment.”

He said two customers lost power but it was restored at 6 a.m.

A fire department spokesman said five people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The fires were brought under control at 2:04 a.m.
