Yankees pick up veteran lefty Jeff Francis

With their starting rotation in tatters, the Yankees acquired veteran lefty Jeff Francis from the Oakland A’s on Friday in exchange for a player to be named later.

The Yankees also received cash considerations in the deal, which adds an arm to a staff that will be without Masahiro Tanaka for at least six weeks as he attempts to rehab a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. That had reduced the presumed starting five to Hiroki Kuroda, Brandon McCarthy, David Phelps, Shane Greene and Chase Whitley.

In another roster move, the Yankees recalled right-hander Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated Jim Miller for assignment after he surrendered five runs in Thursday night’s 9-3 loss in Cleveland.

Francis, 33, has a career mark of 70-80 with a 4.95 ERA, having spent the bulk of his career with the Colorado Rockies. He had a 5.89 ERA in 10 appearances (one start) for the A’s, who owned a pitching surplus since acquiring Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs.
