Cruise ship returns to port following outbreak

A cruise ship with a norovirus outbreak returned to Bayonne, NJ, Saturday — ending a two-week trip that confined more than 300 passengers to their rooms.

The Celebrity Summit departed for Novia Scotia on Sept. 21 and returned to Cape Liberty, where it was sanitized with the help of officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least 311 of 2,113 passengers and 14 of 954 staff members reported feeling ill during the voyage, according to Celebrity Cruises. Symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains.

“We are conducting an extensive and thorough sanitizing onboard the ship and within the cruise terminal,” said Celebrity Cruises spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez.
