NY’s play-by-play men went to dinner: Guess who stole the show?

What happens when almost all of New York’s play-by-play men get together for the first time?

“Everyone told stories about people that we worked with,” Yankees play-by-play man Michael Kay said. “So, obviously those can’t be made public, but there were an awful lot of laughs.”

Kay was one of the 13 broadcasters who convened at restaurant B.L.T. on Park Avenue on Monday night, an idea sparked by Knicks’ MSG play-by-play man Mike Breen.

They were joined by Spero Dedes (Knicks radio), Gary Cohen (Mets TV), Bob Wischusen (Jets radio), Steve Cangialosi (Devils TV), John Sterling (Yankees radio), Ian Eagle (Nets TV), Howie Rose (Islanders TV and Mets radio), Matt Loughlin (Devils radio), Chris Carrino (Nets radio), Kenny Albert (Rangers radio) and Chris King (Islanders radio). Bob Papa (Giants radio) and Sam Rosen (Rangers TV) were the only two unable to attend.

“The star of the night to me had to be Ian,” Kay said, “He could be a comedian. He could imitate people, his comedic timing, he was on fire. Gary and Howie told a lot of stories, which were really funny. Sterling had a couple. A lot of us just listened, me and Mike mostly sit back and laughed really hard. Bob Wischusen told a lot of stories.”

Kay said it had the makings of the start of a yearly tradition, but finding an open date could be a problem. This week’s get-together fell between the end of baseball’s regular season and the start of the NHL and NBA. Only the Yankees missing the playoffs made Monday a possibility.

“The only difficult thing is finding a day, that might be the only day we can it, that or the day after the All-Star break,” Kay said.
