In the new live action movie “Maleficent,” the villain from the classic animated Disney movie “Sleeping Beauty” finally gets her turn in the spotlight. The film, starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, reveals the untold story of how the evil fairy got to the point of cursing a newborn baby.
Let’s just say there’s a lot more to the story than we thought.
But Maleficent isn’t the only Disney villain worthy of a revisit. These five baddies would be perfect for their own films.
Ursula
From: “The Little Mermaid”
Dream casting: Lady Bunny
There’s got to be a good reason the sea witch is banished to a lonely life in a cave with no one to keep her company but a pair of eels and a few “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” Lady Bunny could breathe new life into the campy villain for a film that explores how she got into the whole giving mermaids legs business.
Gaston
From: “Beauty and the Beast”
Dream casting: Cheyenne Jackson
The chauvinistic bad guy had to have gone through a lot of women before he set his sights on Belle. The chiseled Cheyenne Jackson could help audiences understand how he came to think so highly of himself and so lowly of women and beasts.
Cruella de Vil
From: “101 Dalmatians”
Dream casting: Glenn Close
Disney is actually already at work on this one centering on the fiendish dog thief. Close is an executive producer on the project, but we’d love to see her reprise the role she played so well in the 1996 live-action version of the film.
Jafar
From: “Aladdin”
Dream casting: Jim Carrey
Carrey’s comic sensibility would bring a lot to the table for a look into the past of the villain of “Aladdin.” We imagine Jafar’s gotten into some trouble with the Cave of Wonders more than once.
Hans
From: “Frozen”
Dream casting: Alexander Skarsgård
Hans has 12 older brothers, which means his early life was probably a complete mess. “True Blood” stud Alexander Skarsgård would bring just the right mix of charm and creepiness to a flick about the “Frozen” heartbreaker.
