‘Game of Thrones’ premiere reigns with 6.6M viewers

All hail “Game of Thrones.”

The HBO drama’s Season 4 premiere averaged 6.6 million viewers in its return Sunday night — making it the network’s most-watched program since “The Sopranos” finale (11.9 million viewers in 2007).

The 9 p.m. episode grew 50 percent from its Season 3 debut (4.4 million viewers) and up 20 percent from its previous series high of 5.5 million viewers set last year.

And that doesn’t count the many viewers who tried to watch the “Thrones” premiere on HBO Go, the network’s streaming app, which crashed Sunday night from the flood of traffic.

At 10 p.m., new comedy series “Silicon Valley” averaged 2 million viewers — making it HBO’s best half-hour launch since 2009’s “Hung” — while the Season 3 premiere of “Veep” drew 955,000 viewers.
