Who’s a cowardly lion?

Democrats apparently believe they have hit on the way to hold on to the Long Island congressional seat held by Rep. Tim Bishop.

It’s to call his opponent a coward.

Not only that, but to tweet a picture Photoshopped to make this opponent look like the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.”

One slight problem: The man being called a coward is an army officer who was deployed to Iraq in 2006 while assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division — you know, the same unit that helped liberate Normandy.

His name is Lee Zeldin, and he’s still a major in the Army reserve. And a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Jewish War Veterans.

In its news release likening Zeldin to the Cowardly Lion, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee scored Zeldin for not saying whether he would vote for the budget proposed by Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan.

Of course, that’s because Democrats would much rather talk about a theoretical budget that has no chance of making it through Congress while Democrats control the Senate, rather than debate ObamaCare — which became law because Democrats such as Tim Bishop supported it.

We doubt voters will confuse an Army officer and Iraq war vet with the Cowardly Lion. But they might wonder about the straw man at the DCCC who desperately needs some wizard to find him a brain.
