Patrolmen save Chihuahua stranded on highway divider

Highway patrolmen saved an adorable Chihuahua that was stranded on a concrete divider in the middle of a California freeway.

Officer Alex Edmon and his partner responded to a call about a Chihuahua running in the lanes of busy Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek on Friday, but when they arrived, the tiny pup was perched on the divider in the middle of the roadway.

“We attempted to coax it, we could tell it was very frightened, it was shaking — we were able to pet it a little bit, but other than that, we could tell it was not happy,” Edmon told NBC Bay Area.

The adorable pup was holding on for dear life when Edmon, who’s a dog lover and dog owner, attempted to gain its trust with some trail mix. However, the terrified canine was slow to take the bait.

Eventually, the brown Chihuahua relented and the officer got it down safely.

The next day, the officers took it to the Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez, Calif.

A photo taken at the scene was posted to the Contra Costa CHP’s Twitter. It said, “This little dog needed some help off I-680 freeway today. We’re glad he’s safe.” They later learned that “he” was a she.

“It’s not uncommon at all,” is what Edmon told NBC when asked about finding dogs on freeways. He said CHP receives calls about it on a weekly basis.

Although it is unknown how the Chihuahua got on the freeway, the shelter tweeted that she was recovering and if her owner didn’t claim her, they had already received calls from animal lovers inquiring about adopting her.
