NY spends $5M to prevent over-height trucks on parkways

ALBANY — The state is investing millions of dollars to prevent trucks from clipping low-hanging bridges on state parkways.

Gov. Cuomo announced Wednesday that $5 million had been set aside for an infrared system that can detect the height of trucks as they enter parkways.

If a rig is too tall for the road, the technology will trigger a large flashing sign instructing the driver to pull over and call police for help.

Construction of the first over-height infrared system downstate is almost complete on three entrances to the Northern State Parkway on Long Island.
