Duda, Sandberg blame Shake Shack for food poisoning

Those massive lines at Shake Shack could be getting shorter in the near future.

Mets first baseman Lucas Duda and Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg came down with food poisoning over the weekend, claiming it was the result of eating a hamburger from Shake Shake, the popular fast food joint that has a stand at Citi Field and numerous locations in the city.

Sandberg told Philadelphia reporters he lost six pounds in two days after eating a burger at the Citi Field location while Duda missed the Mets game against the Phillies Friday night after eating at a different Shake Shack locale. Duda went to the hospital Friday afternoon and told ESPN New York he thought the burger was undercooked.

A Mets official said the team was investigating the matter.

“A couple of coaches took a bite and didn’t like what they saw and threw the rest away,” Sandberg said. “I was in a rush so I ended up putting it away.

“I had one piece of toast in two days, and I’m feeling fine about that. I don’t want anything in my stomach.”

A Shake Shack spokesperson told ESPN New York they are looking into the situation.

“We’re attempting to get in touch with Ryne Sandberg to learn more,” said Greg Waters, senior manager for marketing and communications with Shake Shack. “At this point we have no further knowledge of the situation, and there have been no other related reports whatsoever.

“Food safety is of paramount importance to us, and we’re connecting with our management team at the Citi Field Shake Shack now to discuss further and find out more.”
