Cops question thug in fatal East Village beating

Cops have a suspect in custody in the savage fatal beating of a 68-year-old grandfather in the East Village, sources said Tuesday.

The 20-year-old suspect was captured on surveillance video slamming Wen Hui Ruan into a wall in front of 745 E. Sixth St. near Avenue D about 8:45 p.m. Friday and then punching and kicking him in the head as he lay on the ground.

Hui died Saturday from his injuries, which included bleeding on the brain, a fractured skull and multiple contusions to his head.

The unidentified attacker — who has a rap sheet that includes robbery, trespassing and drug dealing charges — was being questioned at the 9th Precinct but had not been charged as of noon, sources said.

Hui, a retired garment worker and the father of three daughters, had just dropped off two granddaughters after a trip to a nearby playground before the unprovoked attack, the sources said.

The video shows the suspect following Hui before stepping into his path just a block from the victim’s house and saying something.

He then hurls him into the wall, punches him in the face and stomps on his head at least three times.

Hui was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he died from his injuries on Saturday, police said.
