Facebook adds real-time app to share what you’re listening to

You and Facebook can grow even more intimate.

The social networking titan announced Wednesday that it will add mobile-app technology that recognizes the music, movies or TV shows its users are enjoying, in the company’s latest move to give prominence to media and entertainment.

The user-activated feature would, for example, create a status update on Facebook that identifies the song a user is listening to and provide a 30-second preview of it for the users’ friends.

Facebook, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is working with Spotify, Rdio and Deezer to offer the music previews.

The new tool comes as Facebook is increasingly competing with Twitter to become the main online venue where consumers discuss entertainment in real time.

Facebook shares closed at $60.49 Wednesday, up 3.3 percent.
