Lawyer jumps 22 stories to his death

A Manhattan lawyer jumped to his death out of his luxury Central Park West apartment building Friday, police sources said.

Stephen R. Hertz, a partner at the Third Avenue practice, Debevoise and Plimton LLP, sent a suicide letter to his ex-wife yesterday evening before he plunged out his 22nd-floor window and landed in a tree, the sources said.

A building manager found Hertz, 54, at 9:21 pm mangled in the tree — which had to be cut down to retrieve his lifeless body, the sources said.

Hertz sent the suicide note to his ex-wife who forwarded the email to a psychiatrist who then dialed 911.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last March, another Manhattan lawyer jumped to his death from a 12th-floor window from his Broadway office near City Hall.

Leonard Morton, 45, landed face down on scaffolding after he threw books and paperwork out of the office window.
