Massive sinkhole opens up in college football stadium’s field

Be very, very careful where you throw a touchdown pass if you happen to be playing football at this stadium anytime soon. You might just wind up in the end-of-the-earth zone.

A massive sinkhole has just opened up in the northwestern corner of Governors Stadium, the home field of the Austin Peay Governors, the football team from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.

No one was injured and heavy equipment was on the scene.

There is no word yet whether the sinkhole was created by natural or human causes. Sinkholes are a natural occurrence in areas with soluble bedrock like limestone, and Tennessee is in such a zone.

But scientists also say that sinkholes can be caused by human construction activities like tunneling, mining or anything that disturbs the subterranean water flow.

A huge rock quarry lies about a half-mile from the stadium, but there is no suggestion at this stage that it had anything to do with the sinkhole.
