When the WWE descends on MetLife Stadium for its biggest event of the year on Sunday, it promises to be a show unlike any other the metropolitan area has seen before.

Wrestlemania 29, the WWE’s version of the Super Bowl, is nothing to scoff at, even for non-wrestling fans. The event, which is part of a week-long WWE-themed party is expected to bring over 75,000 fans to MetLife and be broadcast to millions worldwide in over 100 countries.

“Some of you may have been to the pyramids in Egypt or heard the penguins’ cry in the Antarctic, but I promise none of you have seen or experienced anything quite like Wrestlemania,” WWE Chairman Vince McMahon said to media on Thursday.

The show, which should run well over four hours, brings some of the biggest wrestling names to the tri-state area, headlined by Wrestlemania’s main event, John Cena versus The Rock for the WWE Championship.

The Rock, who is one of the biggest names in not just the wrestling industry, but also the film business, called New York City his “home away from home” during a press conference for the event on Thursday afternoon in Midtown.

The WWE’s history is deep-rooted in the New York-New Jersey area, with Wrestlemania being held here three times prior to this one (Wrestlemania I, X and XX). The event is also being held just a quick drive from the WWE’s main headquarters, located in Stamford, CT.

The Rock and John Cena will not be the only draw on Sunday’s card. In addition to that main event, seemingly every big name on the WWE’s talent roster will be competing in one way or another.

The Undertaker, arguably the biggest current star of the WWE, will face CM Punk with his 20-0 Wrestlemania streak on the line as well as former UFC star Brock Lesnar facing WWE COO and Superstar Triple H in a no-holds barred contest.

The WWE has also been conducting fan events and fundraisers for Hurricane Sandy over the past week, including a charity auction at Cipriani on Wall St. on Thursday night that featured appearances by Diddy and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The company will also be holding its annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden (the sight of the first three metro-area Wrestlemania’s) and will have Monday Night Raw at the Izod Center on April 8.

All in all, Wrestlemania 29 promises to be an incredible spectacle as only the WWE can deliver.
